March 10 Economic Crisis - A cynic's perspectiveThere is no denying that we are in an economic crisis. The only debate is whether this constitutes a recession or depression. I’ll leave that for the economist and other academic navel gazers who add little to the GNP of the country.
Politicians all around the world are rolling out stimulus packages, ala F.D. Roosevelt’s new deal. Pour money into the economy in order to kick start spending and get the economic engine going again. Oh yeah, just give us more of what got us into this mess in the first place.
This short term measure might get the economy going, but it fails to address the fundamental problem. The problem is not economic. The problem is social. The problem is people. Their expectations, their wants, their needs and their desires to have it all – no matter the cost.
On one hand you have the greedy – who are most likely university trained MBA’s who want nothing more than to suck all of the money out of the hands of the consumer. I remember sitting in meetings planning how the company I worked for could get “more wallet share from our customers”. That didn’t mean giving them anything more valuable. It was how to coerce them into spending more with us.
On the other hand you have the needy, who want it all, don’t want to work for it and want it now – no matter the cost or future consequences. These are the people who will mortgage their future and the future of their children for the latest, greatest, biggest, better, best. Keeping up with the Jones has taken on an entirely new meaning in this decade of opulence and decadence. Does that new purchase really add to your life, or is it a show piece that will allow you to be viewed by your peers as having “made it”?
There are so many totally useless items out there that do little or nothing to add value to society, but to which marketers have convinced people that they need to have it to be “in”. Then there is the segment who will make credit easily available, with no concern if that stupid consumer has the intelligence to manage their debt or the means to repay the debt. Nope, lend the money, such them dry, keep them behind the eight ball and one pay cheque away from bankruptcy. Yeah that is really the socially conscious thing to do.
Unfortunately I have worked 18 of the last 21 years in an industry that is as guilty as any and there are people, very close and dear to me, who work in industries which exemplify our society’s focus the useless and willingness to over pay for items they do not need; can not afford; or provide no socially redeeming qualities. But my frustration is coming to a boil and I can not keep these thoughts inside me any more. I may be written off as too cynical, even naïve, simplistic or dubbed a raving lunatic. But I will be speak. If I don’t I am no better than the problem I see.
So in the coming days I will exam the current economic crisis and relate it to the underlying failings and weaknesses of humans that have directly contributed to our current crisis.
This will include a look at: - Telecommunication – what value does call waiting have? - Automotive – the pinnacle of wasted resources and spent dreams - Entertainment – why does anyone care who wore what at the Oscars, Grammys or to dinner? - How much is enough – is anybody really worth $12,000,000 dollars a year? - What role are politicians and governments playing? It doesn’t matter what political stripe you have. - Where do we go from here? October 02 Two Words – Hedonism and GreedUnless you are a hermit you have heard that the economy is in teetering . Lending institutions in the United States are in trouble, the financial markets are melting down, investors are getting “nervous” (yeah right!) and the free market now needs government intervention to keep it from collapsing on the average person. With the US markets in turmoil the world markets are feeling the ripples. AND I know why!
Anyone who has taken an introductory University Economics and Psychology course will know the reasons for this melt down. It comes down to two words:
1. Hedonism - the doctrine that pleasure or happiness is the highest good. And devotion to pleasure is a way of life
2. Greed - excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions. (isn’t it ironic that the website I used for the definition brought up a “Future Shop” ad).
I have for many years been telling anyone who would listen, which usually meant friends during a beer induced rant, that we live in an all too consumer driven economy. People have no sense of what is realistic. Society has become far to hedonistic in its approach to living. The pursuit of pleasure meant if people wanted something, they would get it now, no matter the cost or whether they had the money to afford it. The big SUV, the big house, the fancy cloths, the shoes, the latest and greatest electronic gadgets were all purchased and usually on credit.
Society lost the concept of restraint or living within their means. “Don’t pay” events, “we’ll pay your first payment”, “No money – no problem” events allowed people to buy without consideration of having to pay for this crap. They could get what ever they wanted or felt they needed to fit into the “in crowd”. But why do we need bigger vehicles or that mansion? Does anyone REALLY need an iPhone? If yes, why?
“Greed” applies to corporations who, driven by the profit motive, have introduced a plethora of products that serve no purpose other than to make an individual feel special. And if that person couldn’t afford it, no problem! They sold the “paper” to another company who would make exorbitant profits off the usury interest levels they charge the idiots who felt they needed something bigger, better or best.
This of course drove demand, which created jobs, which created “wealth”, which created the desire to have more, better, bigger and the cycle continued.
As long as consumers could afford to make the interest payments then all was well. But if there was a hick-up in the system and they got behind, then watch out.
Corporations will fall back on the axiom that they never held a gun to anyone’s head to make them buy. But that is a cop out. Corporations have spent gobs of money on understanding what are the “triggers” that make people buy. They create ads that make people feel they need an iPhone to be cool, or without the designer cloths they are worthless. They do database compiling along with psychographic profiling to figure out exactly how to “increase their share of the consumer’s wallet”. AND then spend billions on advertising to convince people that they need what it being sold.
And then there are the lending institutions that allowed consumers to borrow far beyond what they could afford to pay back. These corporations seriously need to look at their motives. Bank and finance executives for years have taken obscene bonuses, while the average person was collapsing under a growing crush of credit.
Did these institution realize what they were doing to the common person? If you answer no, then you are more naive than I ever give you credit for.
Psychology 101 – people will pursue happiness (hedonism)
Economics 101 – people will seek to maximize their return on investment (greed).
And remember, “there is a sucker born every minute” and two who are willing to sell to them….
In simplest terms the current economic crisis was been created by people’s desire to have more then they can afford and corporation’s willingness to sell, or lend money, to people who cannot afford what they are buying.
Once those who cannot afford to buy, cannot afford to pay, those who lend are left with huge problems. They are holding the paper on a bunch of “stuff” that no one else can afford to buy. So they tighten up on the lending.
When the supply of money tightens up, then the hedonistic society cannot get the money to buy the “stuff, they really don’t need. AND they may “turn back” that which they can not pay for.
The supply of “stuff” (houses, fancy cars, electronic, etc) increases and the value of those goods decreases, manufactures stop producing “stuff” because the market (of idiots willing to buy) has dried up.
The domino effect takes over and the system collapses on itself. All because of hedonism and greed.
Unfortunately my cynical self does not see a solution in the future. The memory of society is very short and soon those hedonistic people (the suckers) will be buying again and the cycle will start all over again.
Oh, and in this situation there are also the maggots who will seek to profit from the collapse. The auction houses, the repossession companies, the CEOs of major lending institutions who will get billions in government handouts to protect those obscene bonuses they paid themselves.
Take it from a cynical realist – we are in trouble and we only have ourselves to blame for our troubles. Every one of us is either a consumer or someone trying to sell something. Are you spending beyond your means? Is what you are selling truly filling a consumer’s wants and needs, without artificially making them feel inferior if they don’t have it? May 13 Mother's DayWhen you think about it having one day designated for mothers seems a little cheap. Being a mother is probably one of the most demanding, under-rated, under-paid jobs on the planet. And yet woman willing take on the job and the under appreciated challenges of the role.
Alas, not all do well at the job. There are all too many children who are neglected by woman who for what ever reason just handle the stress and requirements of the role.
I have been very fortunate to have had experiences with many wonderful mothers.
While my ex-wife and I had our differences and fell out of love, I still appreciate that she was a wonderful mother to our daughters. She did a magnificent job with our daughters and has moulded them into fine young woman.
My former mother-in-law is a wonderful lady, who I still love and have much respect for. She is a quiet unassuming lady, who won’t give you her opinion unless you really need it. A strong Christian who willingly took a subservient position in her family. And I love her because she would always take my side and support me when I was married to her daughter.
Then there is the lovely lady I am now dating and have fallen madly in love with. She became a mom quite by accident and not only has raised her daughter, but took steps to improve her own education and employability in order to provide a better life for her daughter. She is an incredible strong and resilient lady.
Then there is my good friend who so longs to be a mother. She would be a phenomenal mother, there is no doubt in my mind of that. Alas medical conditions have prevented her from naturally have a child and circumstances make adopting a challenge right now. It seems so unfair that someone so caring and giving would not be given the opportunity.
And finally there is my mother. I love her dearly, even when, sometimes, she can be too inquisitive, but she is always there with unconditional love and support. A bundle of energy that just keeps going and puts woman half her age to shame. And while she should be blissfully enjoying retirement, she willingly gives of herself to help my sister with her children. And her reward, the love from her grandchildren and the knowledge that she is helping my sister get through the rough spots in life. She is a lady I love dearly and am thankful for the support and love she gives. Thank you Mom! For everything!
To all mothers, may you have a wonderful day and accept the gratitude from everyone you have touched in your life. Thank you for all you efforts! April 22 An Inconvenient TruthI watched the Al Gore documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” this morning. It is very well done, very compelling and gives me a different perspective on the person of Al Gore.
When he was Vice President of the United States I thought the man was a goof. But during the film I was struck by how articulate, knowledgeable and passionate he is about the environmental movement and the effects of global warming. It is amazing the power the mass media can have on influencing and create public perception.
I am not naïve enough to believe there is not another side to the story of global warming. But the way Gore presents the theories, rolls out the data and builds the arguments makes it really hard to discount the reality of global warming and the impact it will have on my children and generations to follow.
But here is the challenge for me and all of us. What am I going to do to change my habits to help curb global warming? I can’t be sanctimonious to claim that purchasing a new Hybrid vehicle was driven by my desire to help the environment. Yes, there was some of that in it. But my true motivation was the economics behind the Hybrid. To put it in perspective I would say 80% of the decision was based on economics, functionality and looks of the vehicle, while the much smaller remainder was my thoughts of the environment (and even at that I may be too generous to myself).
Even as I type this, I’m thinking about going out for a ride on my motorcycle. Why? No reason. I have no place to go, but it is sunny out and I just want to be on the road on the bike and feel the wind blowing in my face. So just how committed am I to the environment?
There was one weak point in the documentary. Gore makes a comment that by changing the way we do things, moving away from fossil fuel, to improve global warming will create economic growth. Unfortunately he doesn’t explain how or where that growth will come from. Nor does he address the massive displacement of capital and jobs that would result. The US economy and society is geared around fossil fuels. It is clear that is why there is so much resistance to making the necessary changes. Those holding the economic and political power will not be anxious to give up what they have, even if it means preventing the destruction of future generations.
Everyone should see this documentary. Challenge the facts he presents if you wish, but at least you will be informed. DO NOT LET THE POPULAR MEDIA BE YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF INFORMATION ON THIS. That will result in a distorted and sanitized view of the facts.
And on that happy note, I hope you have a great Sunday. April 17 Why?Why did it happen? What motivated someone to kill so many? What kind of anger was this person dealing with? Why is the American media such a bunch of asses? Why would a civilized society allow weapons, which could inflict so much damage so quickly, to be available and in people’s possession?
So many questions are coming out of the enormous tragedy that took place yesterday at Virginia Tech. There are at least 32 innocent people dead because of one person’s rampage. I am deeply sadden by the events and am having difficulty trying to comprehend it.
The details of the event are sketchy at this time and we will learn more about the gun man, his history, and maybe even why he did what he did.
You can expect the power happy, gun touting and politically influential American gun lobby will be kicking into high gear to make sure that the correct “spin” is put on this event. But after a tragedy of this magnitude I find it hard to understand how anyone could justify allowing such powerful and deadly weapons to be available to the public.
I listened to a press conference yesterday afternoon, where officials from the school and police were answering media questions. I was shocked at how belligerent, stupid and arrogant the reports were. True to American society, those reporters were not trying to gather facts to write a story. They were looking for someone they could skewer and scandalize.
They were second guessing the action of the officials, even before the event facts are completely disclosed. With their precious 20 / 20 hindsight, they were chastising officials on what was or was not done. And yet, these will be the same people who will scream loudest if the civil liberties of the students are curtailed by the types of security measures that would be necessary to prevent this type of tragedy again.
I was struck with a feeling that these arrogant twits expected the officials to know a massacre of this magnitude was inevitable and why weren’t you ready for it. I find American’s are becoming more and more paranoid all the time and this horrific event will only drive that even further. And you watch. To protect their people, the rights and freedoms of those people will be squashed. Rather than trying to correct the sociological and physiological reasons for these events, governments will lower a big hammer and clamp down on liberties in the “interest of protecting everyone”. I have visions of creeping acceptance towards Orwell’s “1984” society.
My heart does goes out the victims and especially those left to morn the losses of these young people. This is a tragedy of immense proportion. And while the political forces position themselves for the debates and crucifixions to come, let us not forget that innocent people are dead because we as a society have not figured out how to deal with those who are in pain, or dealing with anger, isolation and hatred. March 27 I Got My Refund!I got my tax refund yesterday! Oh I was so happy. I filed electronically the day after CCRA opened up the system again and figured it would be longer to get my refund because of the backlog of filings to go in. But it didn’t and the refund came through in under 7 business days.
Yes, I was happy to see the refund. Then it hit me! What am I so happy about, it’s my money in the first place! Those buggers have kept my money for the year and paid me no interest on it.
I probably would not complain or begrudge paying taxes so much if I honestly thought our system and the people who run it are using the money efficiently and spending it on programs that add value to the people of Canada.
Yes, I’m aware the definition of what adds value is very different for each person. I view the senate as a closal waste of money and would have it shut down with a minimal amount of philosophical debate. Events like the sponsorship scandal only reinforced my view that far too much money is wasted politically motivated events and that tighter controls need to be placed on spending and it needs to be open and accountable.
I’ve become so cynical about government and politicians that I find it hard to look at them with anything other than contempt! Hell, I’m finding it a struggle to want to participate in the very valuable privilege I have of voting.
What I find so amusing that is that while the ruling party changed in the last federal election all it has really meant is the talking heads are saying what the other guy was saying before. The liberals are now sounding like the conservatives did when they were the opposition and the conservatives are using the same rhetoric the liberals did when they were in power. Ah, yes the wonders of Canadian politics.
All that aside, I’m glad I’m getting back a refund. I need a new tire and brakes on my motorcycle and with loosing a bunch of weight I could use some new cloths. And this morning the engine warning light just came on my 96 Honda Civic, so God only knows what problem that might be and how much that might cost. My new vehicle purchase plans may get moved up to sooner, rather than later – CRAP!
Easy come easy go as they say! March 13 It was just screaming at meI’m wasting some time in my very exciting work day and on my internet home page two heads lines screamed out at me. These two need to be commented on. I could not, with clear conscience, let these ones pass by without putting my inimitable (or is that immature?) point of view to them.
So with all the ineptitude of a turkey in flight (why did WRKP just flash through my memory?) I give you:
&
Viacom suing Google – now there are a couple of heavy weights doing battle. It provides support to the adage “there is no honour among thieves”.
I can imagine lawyers are parachuting in from all over to get a piece of this action! The suit is for $1 Billion US and yes you read that right! I suspect however, the suit is more symbolic and designed to get one giant to get off their lard ass and do something about a wrong in the system. Mind you if its not, there are going to be some lawyers who will be even richer after this show is over.
Normally I wouldn’t care about this type of thing and certainly would not take Viacom’s side on many issues. But on this one, I hope they win! YouTube is a great sharing sight and the ability to share personal videos, get your 15 minutes of fame, or notoriety, is wonderful. But when YouTube turns a blind eye to the posting of copyright material, then there is an issue. As Viacom said in papers filed in court:
I haven’t heard the statement of defence, but I can just imagine it will be something about “we don’t control the content and are not the police of the content that our users post”. That is a cop out, which allows them do exactly as Viacom purports.
So in this battle of the giants I hope Viacom wins. YouTube will have a place for all those who want to post video they create themselves, but it should not be a place for the exchanging of pirated material.
As for the wonderful protesters on the “wet” coast……I lived in BC for 30 years. I went to University in Vancouver and can tell you that if there is a cause, there is a wacko in BC willing to protest for it! There must be something in the air or water out there that breeds protestors. I almost got caught up in the protest mode, when in 1969, as an impressionable pre-teenager, I marched on Prince George City Hall, with a group of fellow students and those with a conscience, to protest the US nuclear test on Amchitka Island in Alaska. I can even remember the catch phrase “Don’t turn Amichitka in Amshitka!” Pretty catchy eh!
I remember tree huggers tying themselves to trees or driving spike into trees so the foresters couldn’t log in the province. The environmental movement out there is HUGE and no matter what happens, there will be people protesting everything. The stand-offs on the six o'clock news were as popular as the fights on Hockey Night in Canada.
That all said, I do feel for the cause the protesters at the Olympic Flag Ceremony are rallying behind. The homeless situation and the level of poverty in the lower mainland is very problematic. And in Vancouver, you can travel from some of the wealthiest snob centred communities (Bayshore and West Pender), to the poorest of the poor along East Hastings in a matter of 5 Km. There is some merit to the question of why governments and corporations can pour hundreds of millions into sports complexes and legacies, while there are thousands having difficulty surviving day to day.
So let the wackos protest! May they put up a good fight and bring to light the inequities that is Vancouver.
Hmmm, I'm glad I got that off my chest. Have a great day! December 25 MERRY CHRISTMAS!Merry Christmas!
Let us celebrate the birth of our Savior!
I took the following from the December 25th devotional from "Our Daily Bread" It really says it all.
A Fitting Present
A little boy was somewhat perplexed by all the exchanging of presents on Christmas morning, for he had been taught in Sunday school that it was the birthday of the Savior. Finally, after a long period of silence, he asked, “Mommy, when are we going to give Jesus His present? I thought it was His birthday!” Strange, isn’t it, that most of us give gifts to everyone but the One whose birthday we celebrate. A good question we might ask ourselves is this: What am I going to give to the Lord Jesus this Christmas? If you have never trusted in Him as your Savior, the thing He desires most from you is a believing heart. Why not put your faith in Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross so you can be saved from your sins? If by faith you already know Christ as your Savior, then the most wonderful thing you can do this Christmas is to present to God the one gift He most desires to receive from you—your body (Rom. 12:1). Our bodies are to be used for God’s purposes. Because we have accepted the gift of salvation from Him, it’s only reasonable that we should present ourselves to the Father. When we give ourselves, we give the one Christmas present that truly fits the occasion! —Richard De Haan What shall I give for Christmas
Merry Christmas to you and your family. May you come to know the glory and wonder of accepting Jesus as your personal savior. God bless, December 04 The Spin Doctor is in!I do not like spin doctors. These are people who twist the facts to create a image or “reality” that meet an agenda – often political in nature.
It might be one of the reasons I dislike the legal profession so much. I see them as nothing more than spin doctors who twist facts to create their version of the truth. The additional thing with lawyers, though, is that all too many of them will sell their sole to a devil and then claim they were only doing their job.
But that is not my rant tonight. No tonight I am going to be a spin doctors, if only to have some fun at the expense of someone else.
The target – the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada Mr. Stephane Dion.
The spin – the Liberals have elected a leader who few really wanted. He is a second (nay; third) choice leader and one who was elected to stop another candidate, rather than bring hope and new direction to a corrupt group of men and women.
Think about it. Dion was a distant third on both the first and second ballots. It wasn’t until the field thinned by the third ballot that the “anybody but…..” camps began working and Dion benefited from those who didn’t want the other candidates (thanks to the support from the next deputy Prime Minister Gerard Kennedy).
Even in the end he didn’t win with a significant majority. Rather it was a squeaker. Dion garnered just over 50% of the final vote, so how can you say he is the clear winner and choice of the party.
Oh there will be the standard party unity crap spewed, but after the divisiveness of the Chrétien and Martin era’s, the Liberals have a long way to go to look like a cohesive, united party. The only thing the Liberals have going for them, is that the Conservatives under Harper are SO untrustworthy, that the people of Canada have a real memory problem when it comes to electing governments.
And just think….all predictions are that we will be back at the polls in the Spring – oh Joy I can hardly wait – NOT!
There, now wasn’t that fun? December 02 Got Dumped On!December came in with a vengeance! After a wet and dreary November, we got dumped on with snow yesterday. The weather forecast said the snow would start around noon. Sure enough, I looked outside at 11:58 AM and it was snowing. It hasn’t stopped since! I would guess we've gotten at least a foot of snow so far.
My renter and I shovelled the driveway last night and I am about to go out and do it again here shortly. The street plough went by about 6:00AM, so I need to take care of that as well! Oh the joys of living in a northern climate. Again I ask myself “Why?”.
At least I can look forward to Hawaii! I bought the airline tickets for myself and my daughters to go to Hawaii in February. It was a great vacation last year and I’m looking forward to enjoying the same this year. Having my daughters with me will be an added bonus!
Not much else to report or complain about today. Oh wait, no there is.
The Liberals are selecting a new leader this weekend. I use to be a political conference junkie. I would watch all the speeches and listen to the analysis. Now I simply don’t care. I’ve heard the same crap coming from different men and women for too long to believe anything will change. The Liberals were in power for many years and all we got was arrogance and mismanagement of government.
I might have a bad memory, but I do remember that I can’t stand the way the Liberals do government and electing a new leader will not change the power brokers in the back room. So I’m going to take a pass on watching the convention today.
So while the Liberals are shovelling the BS in Montreal, I’m off to shovel snow in North Bay. November 11 Remembrance DayI find this day awkward and confusing.
I deeply want to honour and respect those men and women who died in the defence of my freedom. I want to remember the horrors their loved ones faced when the word came “Your son (daughter) is not coming home”.
And yet I have been fortunate to never have had to experience war. Is it true that if I haven’t experienced it, it never happened? How can I truly understand the impact of these events if I’ve never felt the fear and adrenaline of battle or the loss and grief of death?
But the testament to these events is the fact that I have never experienced it. Thanks to these men and women I have never had to see war as anything other than “happening over there”. So today I am going to take a few minutes out of my not very busy schedule to attend a Remembrance Day event. I WILL not forget! I WILL give thanks for the sacrifice! I WILL thank God for my freedom. I WILL not take it for granted.
As for our troops fighting in Afghanistan. I will remember you also. I thank you for being there, for helping a nation and people who desperately want freedom from a group of zealots who are perverting a faith in order to impose their repressive version of authority. I do not view this as exporting our values. It is a rescue and rebuilding mission. My only hope is that this is not simply to support America’s Oil industry and our nations insatiable thirst for energy (which we waste in such great amounts).
So today, even though I have never experienced the events or the felt the impacts of war, I will remember all of the people in the armed forces; yesterday’s and today’s. I hope you will also.
August 14 They both can't be winners! But they both can sure be losers!
I see where both Israel and Hezbollah are claiming in victory in the senseless war they waged over the last month.
I can’t see either of these groups being winners. Over 900 people are dead! I don’t care if they are Israel or Lebanese – they include woman and children and those who probably were more worried about how they were going to put food on the table than dropping a bomb on the other party.
And how can either side even profess to have won! They both still hate each other with a rage that burns hotter than fires of Hell! If anyone believes this will be the last of the killing they are delusional. The Americans will make sure it happens again (they need the Israelis to do their dirty work in this region), the Muslim zealots will not let it stop, (they are too brainwashed to let more than a single thought into their minds) and the international arms traders won’t let it stop (“by gum there’s money to made over there!”)
I am no historian and will not claim to understand all the nuances of this conflict. Understanding it, or explaining it would take far more space than this short blog allows. But I do know that NO WAR has ever resolved or stopped social or cultural hatred. The damage inflicted will only serve to intensify the flames of revenge in a new generation on both sides. When will we humans wake up and understand that this type of conflict only leads to more conflict. Hatred begets hatred.
There is only one parcel of land and if both groups claim it for religious reasons, then they better figure out a way to share it. If the leaders of these group don’t then the thousands of years of violence will continue and their people will continue to live in a hell on earth!
So tell me – how can either side claim victory then for no other reason than to spread propaganda to their supports in and out of region? July 18 HAPPY BIRTHDAY KYLA!Wow, my little girl turns twenty (20) today! I remember bringing her home from the hospital in Prince George and thinking what a beautiful and delicate little creature she was.
There is a picture I use to have where I am lying on our sofa with a two day old angel sleeping on my chest. I’m holding her gently in my arms with my hands seemingly covering her tiny body (and my hands are not that big). I’m looking down at her on my chest, with a look of such pride and contentment. I’ve misplaced that picture (too many moves in too short a time), but have a stack of negatives that I hope will allow me to retrieve and recreate this picture. But even if I don’t find the picture, that moment is forever frozen in my mind.
And today she is 20 years old and stand almost eye to eye with me! I can hug her, but hold her on my chest - that's not gonna happen anymore! Has time ever shot past! She has matured so much in the last few years and is a beautiful young lady!
This is her day and my thoughts are with her and my dreams are for her. But having her turn TWENTY has caused me to reflect on a few things.
Like how old I’m getting in the numeric sense of things! At least I do not feel all that old! The digits are getting up there, but since loosing my weight and beginning exercising I’m feeling a lot better physically. Now if I could only get my mental state to get a grip!
The other thing I have been reflecting on is love. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about love over the last while. Wondering how and why a person falls in love, are there degrees of love and what does it take to get to a fully committed, unconditional love.
There was one conclusion I came to. I love a lot of people and for me there are different kinds of love. There is the love for friends I have, which means I would do things for them without giving it a second thought and really enjoy being around and sharing company with. There is a love for family, where no matter what, you tolerate, support and care for them.
There is the love I have for my lord and saviour, Jesus Christ. He gave his life for me and I love him unconditionally for that. And while I know my love for Him and God should be unconditional, there are times I find I am negotiating that love and drawing back.
Then there is the unconditional, fully committed kind of love a person can have. This love says that no matter what, I will be there for you, I will lay my life on the line to protect you and nothing you say or do will EVER cause me to waver in my love for you.
I can find only two people that I have this kind of unconditional love for and they are named Kyla and Kristyn, my two lovely daughters.
In being totally honest with myself I can think of no other people to whom I am as committed to in my love. I love my parents and my sister dearly and richly, but there have been times when I have pulled back my love because of things said, or a misunderstanding. I once loved my wife and felt I would lay my life on the line to have protect her – at one time. But obviously that love was not 100% unconditional and committed because I am not longer with her.
No it is my daughters, who every time I think about I get a shiver of pride and lump in my throat. They have frustrated me and made me so angry at time I’ve hit things. But I NEVER abandoned them, will never leave them and as long as I am breathing I will support and help them as I can. If there are wrong or in trouble, I will not blinding profess their innocence, but I will support them and help them through what ever trouble they may be in. I will celebrate their success with them and be their number one cheerleader!
Yes there is a special place in my heart and soul for my daughters. My love runs deep and pure. And with Kyla turning 20 today and her sister heading to University in a few weeks, I am realizing more and more how important that love is to me and how much life I get from it. Without that love I may have checked out a long time ago!
Happy Birthday Kyla – Daddy loves you! June 20 Hold Your Heads HighI watched solemnly last night as the realization that the Edmonton Oilers might win the Stanley Cup slipped away. But as the final empty net goal was scored, I thought “Hold your heads high mighty warriors; you have treated us to a wonderful run and extremely entertaining hockey. Let not the sting of defeat dampen your spirits, you have nothing to be ashamed of!” March 28 Debunking "The Da Vinci Code"I understand the novel “The Da Vinci Code” is an engaging and entertaining piece of fiction. I plan to read it soon, although I will borrow a copy from my daughter rather than buy it and put any money in the pocket of the author!
The problem with the book is that it is fiction, false, made up, not true and yet it is presented by the author as truth. Dan Brown skilfully weaves some historical facts, with fictional characters and makes some wild claims about the development of the church and historical events.
Now this is a threat to Christianity, but it also a wonderful opportunity. It is an opportunity for Christians to talk about the true of Jesus, who he was, why he came to earth, the promise he made to us and why he died for us.
Another positive of the book is that it is motivating me to learn more about the history of Christianity, the bible and something called “Apologetics” (?????). I realize that while I am willing to accept Christ as my saviour I need to be able to evangelize for Him and understand more deeply what it all means.
I was just at a satellite seminar where some very knowledgeable gentlemen were discussing the book and its misrepresentation of history. They presented some wonderful resources that I will be checking out over the next little while. AND that is certainly more productive than playing solitaire on the computer!
I was marvelling as I watched how different the Christian response is to this heresy than the fundamentalist Muslim response to Salman Rushdie's novel “Satanic Verses”. At least Christians haven’t taken out a contract on the head of the author. Instead, Christians are looking at ways to use this book and soon to be released movie as an opportunity to open discussions about Christ, his life and his death.
The unfortunate part of the book, and pending movie release, is that we live in a society filled with mindless lemmings. My cynical self believes all too many people will believe the lies presented in the book because it is talked about in the media or in movies. People clamour to ideas that bring them comfort and does not require them to think too hard about it. Since the book is an engaging and easy read, then they believe it to be true.
I will write more about this. But first I need to do some additional research to better educate myself on the issues and lies presented as facts.
Till next time….. March 14 On CelebritiesI do not understand fascination, fixation and fantasies people get have about celebrities. Grown people can become total idiots when they get close to a celebrity. There are far too many TV programs dedicated to whose sleeping with whom, or what gown someone wore to an opening night event. Even when in Hawaii I kept hearing about who owned property on Maui, or speculation about who was rumoured to be building a house.
WHO CARES? BETTER STILL WHY SHOULD WE CARE?
I don’t care what Brad and Angelina are doing. We all know Tom Cruise is whacked, we don’t need to hear about everyone of his antics to prove it. Why is Courtney Love considered news worthy ? That woman needs our sympathy and support more than anything.
But here we are, so worried about every aspect of the lives of people who are no different from you or me. Yes, they might be able to act, do a sport and have more money than brains, but why does that make them so special? Are our lives so miserable, boring and mundane that we have to live vicariously through others? I hope not!
Society needs to realize that these people entertain us – that’s it! They are not going to find a cure for cancer. They will not bring political peace to the middle east. And the fact that Paul McCartney went to Newfoundland does nothing to change my view of the seal hunt (which I didn’t like in the first place, but that is for another rant).
Unfortunately there appear to great mass of people in society who are so desperate for something or lack a minimal level of intelligence, that celebrities are placed on pedestals and idolized.
Even the “phenomena” that is “American Idol” is ridiculous because it is so contrived and manufactured. People need to start thinking for themselves, but I fear that is not going to happen anytime soon.
All I’m saying is accept these people for what they are – entertainers. That’s it. Realize they get paid way too much for what they do and leave them to their own pathetic little lives. Or look into a mirror and ask the question – why are you so enamoured with them? What is missing from your life? A Saviour perhaps?
Time to get off my soap box. Have a good one. March 08 Different Faces -- Same RhetoricLet me preface my comments by saying I totally support our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. They need to know that. Yeah the crap they are involved in was started by others (those whacked out terrorist who have hijacked the Muslim religion & that whacked out gun happy President the US has), but it is our humanitarian responsibility to help the innocent caught in the middle and those trying to rebuild a nation.
That said I am totally baffled by the rhetoric coming out of our politicians in Ottawa regarding the involvement of Canadian Troops in these regions.
If you listen closely, the Conservative government are saying almost exactly what the former Liberal government said when they were in power. And now in opposition, the Liberals are sounding just like the Conservatives did when they were in opposition.
Does this mean that it doesn’t matter who is in power, the Canadian people will continue to hear the same BS, only coming out of different mouths? They must think the Canadian electorate is totally disinterested and stupid – OK, so we are, but that doesn’t make what they do right!
And they wonder why the Canadian electorate is so disenchanted, cynical and disenfranchised! Give me a break! March 06 Sorry I can't adopt you! When I tell people I’m already planning to take my daughters with me to Maui next year it’s hilarious how many immediately quip “Would you adopt me?” The idea of going to Maui, that little piece of paradise, if only for a week or ten days is so compelling that everyone would love to get there. And I am blessed that I will be able to give that gift to two very special girls that I love dearly.
I have said in this blog before, I wish I lived closer to my daughters. I miss them. I miss their bickering. I miss their ignoring me. Heck I even miss their messes.
Our relationship is changing as they transition from little girls to young ladies. Kyla is going to be twenty this year and has become a lovely mature young woman, who is getting better about calling good old dad, just to say hi. I love it when she does. Kristyn is still very busy in her teenage world and I still have to try and catch her at home when I can.
I make sure I tell my daughters how much I love them as often as I can. I do this both verbally, which is a big break through for me, because before they came along, I would find it very hard to tell someone those three little, but powerful words. When I’m close enough I love to give them hugs.
But I also tell my daughters how I feel through my writing. Here are two pieces I wrote to them. They are rough (I’m not a poet) and thank goodness poetry can be free form.
To Kyla and Kristyn, here is an open statement of my love to you:
Greg Springall
When you were born, you melted my heart,
So tiny, so fragile, so beautiful.
You taught me what it meant to love,
With all my heart, unconditionally, all the time.
My love for you grows every day,
Stronger, deeper, purer.
My love is expressed in many ways,
A hug, a smile, something done just for you.
Bring your hurts, problems, hopes and dreams
I will be your confidant, advisor, friend.
My love for you will never end,
I will protect, comfort and support you - forever.
Greg Springall
You were a gift from God,
My beautiful, tiny, fragile Angel.
My arms trembled as I held you,
How could I protect you, comfort you?
God filled me with love,
More powerful than life.
“I give you the power to love,
She is my gift to you,”
As you grow, so does my love,
Yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Now you are grown, finding your own way
You don’t need dad any more.
My arms tremble, longing to hold you,
To protect you, to comfort you.
Into God’s care I give you,
With prayers that you feel my love.
You are my Angel
Yesterday, today and tomorrow. |
