May 27 "Grease"It has to be tough doing a stage show of a popular movie. Everyone knows all the words and sings along with every song! You also have the expectations created by the original actors who created such memorable characters.
Such is the case for West Ferris’s High School production of “Grease”, which I saw last night. As soon at the opening song started I remembered how much I enjoyed the movie and began bopping along and began to hear John Travolta and Olive Newton-John singing “Summer Nights” in my head.
The show was fun and pretty well done. It was not perfect and some of the students were very weak singers and some seemed to be really thinking about the dance steps, but overall I enjoyed it. There was one song sung by a fellow where I really hope was suppose to be deliver in an off key manner, with awkward dance moves. It was delivered by one of the “awkward” characters and was presented in a very “tongue in cheek” manner. It was a hoot to listen to, but if he was trying to sound good – oh boy!
There were also some glarring technical glitches with the wireless mikes. Fortunately the affected actors didn't let that phase them and the young lady who played Risso, did a great job in projecting to compensate for the loss of her mike.
There were some very fine performances. The young man who played Danny put in a great performance and had the Travolta groan down pat! The female leads all delivered fine performances.
There were a few week scenes. The “Greased Lightning” and “Hand Jive” were not delivered with the energy they deserve. However, I’m also comparing it to the movie version with professional musicians and singers. Last night it was a high school band and young actors with really big hearts.
“Grease” is such a fun show. Light hearted, some teen issues dealt with and overly sweet “bubblegum Pop” music. Watching the production last night brought back wonderful memories of when I first saw the show as a shy and nerdy teenage boy, who didn’t seem to fit in.
I remember attending the show at the “Parkwood” theatre in Prince George, with a group of about six guys. We were all 17 or 18 years old. A little nerdy – none of us had girl friends at that time. I remember when Olivia Newton-John came out at the end in her TIGHT black outfit – there was a collective sigh (or was that a moan) that resonated from that group of young (hoping to get lucky) boys. The conversation that night all seemed to centre around just how “hot” she looked.
I’m going to have to rent that movie again and watch it for the umpteenth time. I never get tired of it. November 09 Thanks Mare for the IdeaHere is something totally mindless - which is right up my alley! Ah, what the heck, some people think I'm a space cadet, so now we have proof where I come from.
It's actually pretty accurate.

Remember growing older is mandatory, growing up is optional, laughing at yourself is therapeutic!
I wish I could take credit for writing this wonderful piece of fun, but alas, I stole it from an email I got.
Have a Great Weekend
To Lori's Comment - you go ahead and steal away! I stole (er borrowed) it from someone else, so go ahead. If it gives people a laugh, then pass it along - just don't pass it off as your own. And thanks for letting me know it gave you a "much needed" laugh. That has made my weekend!
Best wishes to all |
